2009 Digital Calendar photo description
“Have a Whale of a Holiday!”
Swimming with a Whale Shark, the largest fish in the sea, is a life changing experience.
Although they are sharks, they are harmless, feeding off plankton and small fish.
Here a marine biologist free dives down to photograph the spot patterns on this
ocean behemoth in order to number it and track its movements
Whale Shark Rhincodon typus
The Whale Shark is the biggest shark and the biggest fish but is NOT a whale! It has a huge mouth
which can be up to 1.4 m wide. Its thick dark gray skin is 10 cm thick. A Whale Shark can measure
up to 14 m in length, although the average length is 7.6 m, and weighs up to 15 tons,
