NATURE OF BUSINESS: SouthAfrican subsidiary of a Global Heavy Industrial Manufacturing Company

JOB LOCATION: Johannesburg

REPORTS TO: Managing Director, South Africa

TOTAL STAFF RESPONSIBILITY: 12 people

SUMMARY OFEXECUTIVE OPPORTUNITY: Support the business through the efficient management of the engineering department and the overall control of the safety, health,environment and quality management system. Provide input to the sales department and meet with clients when necessary regarding the company’s design and engineering capabilities.

 

GROUP BACKGROUND: The South African subsidiary offers customers a complete range of handling technology for every application – optimised by comprehensive sales and service support. Their extensive product range, with lifting capacities which range from one ton to 300 tonnes, includes a wide range of solutions for specific industries for travel applications, load handling at the workplace and material flow in production and storage and they are leaders in hot metal ladle cranes. Customers include the steel producers, smelters, paper mills, vehicle manufacturers and heavy engineering companies. Around 200 permanent people are employed by the SouthAfrican company as well as about 60 contractors, although this numberfluctuates. The organisation is amongst the leaders handling technology inSouth Africa.

KEY EXECUTIVE ATTRIBUTESREQUIRED:

·         Must be a graduate. Preference for a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree. Essential to be currently registered as a Professional Engineer (in order to “sign off” designs

·         At least fifteen years post-qualifying experience gained in an engineering and design function within the heavy general engineering sector, an EPCM company or an engineering consultancy.Knowledge of cranes would be an advantage

·         Must have managed a team of design engineers and have knowledge of the safety, health, environment and quality function and systems

·         Knowledge of equipment available in the market, the ability to relate cost with budgeted figures using comparative statements and to deliver the design at optimized cost

·         Knowledge of the interaction between technical and commercial issues and customer requirements

·         A successful history of building, developing, motivating and leading a high calibre team of managers

KEY JOB PERFORMANCE AREAS:

·         Management of Order Implementation

·         Ensure that designs are produced byrelevant personnel in accordance with specifications

·         Oversee that the Sales, Engineeringand Fulfilment Departments work in synergy to optimise business efficiencies

·         Ensure that the SHEQ managementsystem is monitored and controlled to ensure compliance with legislative andISO requirements

·         Make effective and well informedcontributions to the development of a business plan for the company

·         Identify and make appropriate recommendationsfor modification requirements

·         Ensure compliance with the EngineeringCouncil of South Africa and Health and Safety legislation

·         Keep employees abreast of companyprogress through regular feedback and communication sessions
