TOTAL STAFF RESPONSIBILITY:

300 full time staff and in the region of 100 contractors

 

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Managing an annual cost budget of N$300 million (US$40 million)

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The General Manager, Operations, will have total responsibility for the smelting operations of the company, with a daily throughput of approximately 600 to 700 tonnes of copper concentrate and providing effective leadership to the operations team.

 

KEY ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

  • A formal qualification, preferably in Metallurgy
  • Strong interest and experience in an industrial operations environment managing at least 150 people
  • Should have had work experience in an industrial environment and managing a labour force in an emerging market
  • Advantageous, but not essential, to have experience in a smelting environment and ideal to have experience of a copper smelting process
  • Would be an added advantage to have had trade union negotiating experience in a formal structure through representative bodies

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Key emphasis on the production process to ensure that production plans are achieved and on budget
  • Implement strict quality control for supplies to the refinery/ies of the right quality, timing and delivery
  • Develop a well motivated and strong smelting team by providing the necessary managerial talent, team leadership and technical expertise 
  • Particular focus on safety, health and the impact on the environment of the smelting operations and work effectively with the authorities in the management of Health, Safety and Environmental issues
  • Manage both internal liaison (EXCO and staff; Executives in overseas head office and operations)  and external liaison (suppliers, customers and authorities) relationships in a collegial, respectful and values driven manner
  • Be an active Member of the Executive Committee and contribute to the continued success and profitability of the company
  • Deputise for the Managing Director in his absence
