NATURE OF BUSINESS: Mining Company 

JOB LOCATION: Johannesburg

  REPORTING TO:   Chief Executive Officer

  FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:   R4.8 billion

SUMMARY OF EXECUTIVE OPPORTUNITY:   Assume responsibility and authority for the effective leadership and profitable management of the mining operations and the planning, projects and logistics functions, so as to achieve a financial performance which is in line with agreed objectives, with particular emphasis on:

  • Ramping up annual production from 3,5 million tonnes to 6 million tonnes and achieving production efficiencies
  • Leading mine expansion and electricity sub-station construction projects
  • Reducing operating costs
  • Optimising the logistics function
  • Maintaining the highest levels of safety
  • Ensuring the maintenance of harmonious industrial relations
  • Operating within environmental constraints
  • Creating an ethos of excellence and desire for continuous improvement in all aspects of the mine’s operations

KEY EXECUTIVE ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED:

  • Establish him/herself as Chief Operating Officer without alienation of current staff and rapidly assume control of the position in order to build upon the company’s existing success and momentum
  • Establish credibility and gain acceptance from the Chief Executive Officer, the Board and the Executive Committee as an individual of professional integrity and extensive mining knowledge and capabilities
  • Determine, in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer, strategic objectives and operating criteria for the immediate, middle and long term
  • Effectively manage all available resources to achieve on optimum performance by: demonstrating strong leadership; where necessary re-organising resources to maximise efficiency, and creating an ethos of excellence and desire for continuous improvement
  • Control, regularly evaluate, and report on the performance of mine’s operations against established objectives, plans and budgets
  • Build relationships with the company's major shareholders, local government and the local community
  • Establish credibility and expand existing profitable relationships with the company’s mining contractors and suppliers
  • Make presentations on the performance of the mining operations, forecasts and new projects to external shareholders and  the media
  • Regularly assess the competence of functional managers, motivating, mentoring, guiding and supervising their direction, appraisal and compensation within the limits of designated authority
  • Ensure that suitable training and management development of employees is provided enabling them to optimise their potential and provide management succession for key posts
  • Keep abreast of the latest trends in the mining industry, particularly the Mine Health and Safety Act, Mining Charter and Social and Labour Plans
  • Contribute to the growth and profitability of the company, by implementing an appropriate style of management which embodies strategic vision and which encourages innovation and the initiation of new and better ways of doing things

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Should ideally have either a Bachelor of Science (Mining Engineering) or a Bachelor of Technology (Mining) degree
  • A Master of Business Administration degree would be advantageous
