POSITION: Head of Private Debt

COMPANY: Alternative Investment Fund Manager  

LOCATION: Hybrid, Cape Town or Johannesburg, South Africa

 

POSITION SUMMARY:    
The Head of Private Debt is a senior leadership role carrying full responsibility for the fund’s investment performance, commercial development, and day-to-day operations. The postholder will lead and develop a team while remaining personally active across deal origination, execution, and portfolio management. Over time, this position will build up a larger team as the fund scales up and grows.

Alongside managing the team, the Head of Private Debt oversees the investor relationship programme and oversees the complete deal pipeline, being responsible for the fund’s performance.

 

KEY TASKS

  • Strategy & Fund Development - Contribute to the fund’s investment strategy, market positioning, and product development in partnership with senior stakeholders
  • Team Leadership & Management - Lead, manage, and develop direct reports, setting clear objectives, providing regular coaching, and conducting formal performance reviews
  • Investor Relations (‘IR’) - Own and be accountable for the fund’s investor relations programme, personally manage key engagements with institutional investors, including strategic updates, bespoke reporting, and senior-level engagement at key moments
  • Deal Oversight & Portfolio Management - Maintain overall responsibility for the fund’s deal pipeline and portfolio
  • Personal Deal Execution - Originate, structure, and execute a personal deal flow from inception through to close and ongoing monitoring, working end-to-end 
  • Cashflow Management - Maintain a forward-looking view of the fund’s cashflow position, including capital deployment, interest and fee receipts, scheduled repayments, and distributions
  • Compliance & Legal Structure - Maintain overall accountability for the fund’s compliance

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree-educated 
  • CFA, CFA Institute Certificate in Private Markets, or equivalent qualification desirable

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Significant experience in private debt, direct lending, or credit investment, with a demonstrable track record of originating and executing transactions independently over 10+ years (preference for 15+ years)
  • Hands-on experience in investor relations, fundraising, with the credibility to lead senior investor conversations
  • Strong credit and structuring skills across a range of asset types and capital structures
